Mercedes-Benz China's half-year report: strong growth in the core luxury market, further strengthening of local R&D

On July 10, Mercedes-Benz announced its sales in China in the first half of 2024.

Thanks to its keen insight into market demand and supply chain improvements, Mercedes-Benz maintained strong resilience in the first quarter and further recovered in the second quarter. Data shows that Mercedes-Benz's deliveries in China increased by nearly 10% month-on-month in the second quarter, and a total of more than 352,600 new cars were delivered in the first half of 2024.

Overall, Mercedes-Benz still leads the pack in the high-end luxury segment, and in the core luxury segment where domestic brands and new forces are rapidly penetrating, Mercedes-Benz has maintained its strong position. Data shows that Mercedes-Benz's core luxury product matrix saw a nearly 6% increase in deliveries in the first half of the year, and a more than 15% increase in the second quarter. The long-wheelbase C-Class sedan and long-wheelbase GLC SUV saw year-on-year increases of 32% and 49% respectively in the first half of the year.

It is worth mentioning that the delivery of the long-wheelbase E-Class has continued to rise since it was launched in December last year, with a month-on-month increase of more than 85% in the second quarter. In the latest June, the retail sales of the long-wheelbase E-Class reached 15,200 units, ranking first in the sedan segment above 300,000 yuan.

In addition, thanks to the increase in deliveries of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class sedan, Mercedes-Benz remains the first choice for customers in the luxury car market worth one million yuan and above.

According to the China Passenger Car Association, in the first half of this year, the year-on-year decline in China's fuel vehicle market increased month by month, while the growth of the new energy vehicle market accelerated. Mercedes-Benz accurately predicted the trend and responded to market uncertainties with a product strategy of oil and electricity and a diversified new energy technology path.

In the second half of this year, Mercedes-Benz will launch a number of major new energy products, including the new pure electric G-Class SUV, the new long-wheelbase GLC plug-in hybrid SUV, the new generation EQA pure electric SUV and EQB pure electric SUV, and the latest modified pure electric EQE.

On the 45th anniversary of the G-Class off-road vehicle, in addition to the new pure electric G-Class off-road vehicle, models such as the new G 500 and the new G 63 will be upgraded.

Mercedes-Benz has always maintained a strong position and it is inseparable from its deep cultivation of the Chinese market. In order to further meet the needs of the Chinese market, Mercedes-Benz is strengthening its local R&D capabilities. Its Shanghai R&D Center ushered in the upgrade and opening of a new building in April. The current R&D team in China has fully covered various major fields such as advanced design, intelligent interconnection, electric travel, autonomous driving, localization and vehicle testing, and is committed to creating products and experiences that "understand China better" at the "China speed".

Mass-produced vehicles equipped with the new MMA platform will be put into production at Beijing Benz from 2025, and its pure electric models will adopt a full-range 800-volt electrical architecture. MMA platform models will be equipped with MB.OS, the first self-developed architecture from the vehicle end to the cloud of a luxury brand, to achieve lifelong digital iteration and evolution of the vehicle.

With the support of the MMA platform, 800-volt architecture and MB.OS, the product strength of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles will once again undergo a qualitative change.
